Robbie Walsh is a Bodhrán player and proud Dubliner raised with a strong musical background in many genres, his style is the definition of diversity. Inspired by the fantastic playing of his uncle, Robbie began to learn ‘the ropes’ from the great Noel Dowling of Kilkenny in what he feels is his second home, Áras Chrónáin. To this day the ‘Áras’ is the place were he feels completely at home with music. A hive of traditional Irish culture, the Áras has been the starting point for many successful musicians.
Learning the basics and the structure of trad music with Noel, his uncle then showed him how to play with feeling and how to interact with musicians in a live setting; all the while being mindful of the importance of accompanying songs. This was an aspect of music playing that would help Robbie become the established musician he is today. Taking these skills to the vibrant session-culture throughout Dublin, he began to shape his style.
Robbie began competing in the Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann Fleadh competitions in 2007 and won the Dublin Senior Bodhrán Championship in the qualifying rounds for Fleadh Ceoil Na hÉireann. The following year, with determination and persistence he won the Dublin and the Leinster Bodhrán Championships; moving on to win the Senior All Ireland title one month later at Fleadh Ceoil na hÉireann in Tullamore. Taking the gold medal in all three senior competitions in 2008 was a great achievement which helped to propel Robbie’s career forward.
Taking his first teaching job in the Adult Education Centre of the secondary school he attended as a student, Old Bawn Community School, he began to learn how to teach adults across all levels of drumming, to identify the needs and strenghs of his students and adapt to the varying aspects of how individuals learn.
Robbie’s natural teaching progression moved on to teaching younger people. He took up a job in a local primary school, teaching young children how to play through games and fun rhythms. Quickly making a name for himself as a percussion coach, he became a well sought-after name within Dublin and its surrounding areas. He has taught in the following primary and secondary schools:- Holy Rosary NS – Tallaght, St Joseph’s – East Wall, Colaiste Bríd – Clondalkin, St Aidans – Tallaght, Tallaght Community School, Hollypark Boys NS – Monkstown, Killinarden NS – Tallaght, Old Bawn Community School – Tallaght, Woodlands Academy – Kilmacanogue, CBS – Naas, Gaelscoil Chnoc Liamhna – Knocklyon; also giving workshops in colleges, such as New Park Music Centre in Blackrock.
Shortly thereafter he became a founding member of the band ‘Loose’, releasing two albums and playing in various venues all around Europe. He began to mix with lots of musicians from across all genres. Throughout his time touring with Loose he also played with various different bands such as Ciorras, Coras, The Hunters, Keeva, Full Set, Blasta and The Jeremiahs. He also worked closely with dance shows and companys such as Celtic Ceilí, Celtic Legends and Damhsa. He entertains and teaches audiences in theatres, festivals and the corporate-world alike. His international work has led him to discover and be inspired by various cultures across Europe, the United States and the Middle East. He was honoured to be invited to play in such widespread places as the famous Carthage Music Festival, in the ancient city of Carthage in Tunis,Tunisia; high up in the Maramures Mountains of Romania sharing his music with the local people while on tour; and wowing audiences as far west as Florida and as far east as Dubai.
Robbie has also worked with a lot of individual musicians on various projects and albums, such as Daoiri Farrell, Alan Doherty, Laoise Kelly, Gerry O’Donnell, Tom Walsh, Seamus Begley, Joe McKenna, Paul Kelly, Eleanor Shanley, Brendan Hayes, Colin Farrell and Frankie Lane to name but a few.
He has also shared the stage with Donal Lunny, Karen Tweed, Cormac Breathnach, Gerry O’Connor, Brendon Begley, Niall Keegan, Antonio Beresky and Paul Brady.
His most recent projects include working and developing music with the bands Perfect Friction and Four Winds, he is a founding member of both bands. Perfect Friction is a well established six piece band from Leinster whose members are well known for their ability to blend classic contemporary tunes with traditional rhythms. They are about to release their first album. Four Winds is a powerful ensemble of four, equaling the high energy and power that Perfect Friction bring, but deeply rooted in Irish traditional music.

Having gathered such a vast amount of experience during his musical career Robbie decided to set-up TheBodhranBuzz to further extend the knowledge of the Bodhrán throughout the world, via master class workshops, regular group lessons and private teaching (face to face and Skype). Robbie is also a renowned coach for those entering competition, helping many of his students reach the ‘gold’ as he did back in 2008.
